Alice and the Flamingo

One of the more surreal but ultimately unforgettable chapters from Lewis Carroll’s classic tale  – The Queen’s Croquet Ground – in which young Alice is ordered to play a game of croquet. Only, instead of the traditional mallet and ball, she’s told to use a poor flamingo and a hedgehog! A scene captured beautifully in this enchanting bronze garden sculpture…

“Alice thought she had never seen such a curious croquet-ground in her life; it was all ridges and furrows; the balls were live hedgehogs, the mallets live flamingoes, and the soldiers had to double themselves up and to stand on their hands and feet, to make the arches!”

From the classic Lewis carrolL tale

No ordinary game of croquet!

The chapter begins as Alice encounters some curiously card-shaped gardeners, who’re hurriedly painting white roses red to avoid the Queen of Hearts and her notorious wrath. While Alice does her very best to hide the gardeners, the enraged monarch’s mind is made up…it’s off with their heads!

Meanwhile, the Queen invites Alice to a game of croquet, using live flamingos and hedgehogs – which, quite understandably, makes for a chaotic experience for all involved, not helped by the Queen’s frequent requests to fetch the executioner.

The Cheshire Cat makes a welcome reappearance during the game, to whom Alice confides her frustrations. Although the grinning feline is only visible as a floating head, the King demands his removal – and another argument unfolds.

Thinking quickly, Alice deflects blame, suggesting the imprisoned Duchess might help. Before the Duchess arrives, however, the Cat vanishes, leaving the King, Queen, and the seemingly overworked executioner searching fruitlessly while the game descends further into pandemonium!
