"They danced by the light of the moon"
The British poet and painter known for his absurdist wit, Edward Lear began his career as an artist at the tender age of 15. A talented painter, Lear quickly gained recognition for his work—enough to be hired by the London Zoological Society to illustrate the parrots at London Zoo. As a poet, Lear was a champion of nonsense verse; regular poems that include made-up words and fantastical characters. This mix of the normal and the absurd led Lear to publish his first book of poetry, A Book of Nonsense, in 1846—while his best-known work, The Owl And The Pussycat, featured in the 1871 collection, Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany, and Alphabets. The beloved poem tells the enchanting love story of the owl and the pussycat, sailing away on a pea-green boat to marry in the land where Bong-Tree grows.
