COMING TO A GARDEN NEAR YOU...

A Very Unique
Shepherd's Hut

Here at Robert James Workshop, our craft is rooted deeply in the art of storytelling. We create bronze sculptures and water features that transform gardens into magical landscapes; stunning outdoor features inspired some of history’s best-loved children’s authors.

Every now and then, however, a new idea encourages us to step beyond the familiar. This is how La Roulotte Artistique, our one-of-a-kind shepherd’s hut, was born!

“The Mole was tremendously interested and excited, and followed him eagerly up the steps and into the interior of the caravan…

….it was indeed very compact and comfortable. Little sleeping bunks—a little table that folded up against the wall—a cooking-stove, lockers, book-shelves, a bird-cage with a bird in it; and pots, pans, jugs, and kettles of every size and variety!”

The Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame

Inspired by classic children’s literature

Exactly how one decides to use this beautifully crafted artisan hut is only limited by imagination. It can serve as a warm and welcome refuge away from the turbulence of modern life, an inspiring artist's retreat; or perhaps just for anyone who appreciates the extraordinary!

Crafted from oak and larch, and complete with plenty of charm and ingenious details, La Roulotte Artistique feels like something pulled straight from the pages of a storybook; perhaps the wistful countryside setting of Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows or Roald Dahl’s Danny the Champion of the World, in which the titular hero spends his early childhood living in a traveller’s caravan with his father.

A small hut with huge potential

Step inside, and you’ll discover an interior packed with enchanting and thoughtful details. A flip-up bench seat offers comfortable seating by day and somewhere to rest a tired head by night. Shelves line the walls, ready to house sketchbooks, treasured novels, or art supplies for your next masterpiece. A small wood-burning stove crackles invitingly, a welcome sight on a chilly evening.

The hut is fully insulated, enough to tackle those cold snaps of midwinter. Modern touches like plug sockets, a mains hook-up, and soft interior lighting blend beautifully with the hut’s old-world charm; never sacrificing comfort for character. Its dimensions – 180 cm wide, 300 cm long, and 250 cm high – make it compact yet spacious enough to fulfill a range of uses.

In fact, this beautiful shepherd’s hut served as a temporary office space during RHS Chelsea Flower Show last year, and we’ll certainly be bringing it back again this year! The combination of functionality and charm makes it ideal as a work space, a creative studio, or simply a quiet sanctuary for those much-needed moments of calm.

“Then I went out the caravan door and sat on the platform with my feet on the top step of the ladder. There was a new moon in the sky and across the road the big field lay pale and deserted in the moonlight…”

Danny the Champion of the World, Roald Dahl
