Robert James Workshop Retrospective

A Year in Bronze
Garden Sculptures

Well, dear reader. Another turn around the globe and another exciting and eventful year here at Robert James Workshop; from our annual expedition to RHS Chelsea Flower Show to the welcoming of new characters to our beloved garden sculpture range. Here are just a few of the highlights of the last 12 months…

“You can't stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.”

Literary sculptures on Display

Peter Rabbit and Alice at Forde Abbey

For those of you who had the pleasure of visiting Forde Abbey in Dorset this year, you might have encountered a number of our beloved literary-themed sculptures dotted amongst the historic grounds of the former Cistercian monastery – including Alice, the Mad Hatter Water Feature, and a whole host of Wonderland favourites. From the stunning Mad Hatter Tea Party Urn, the White Rabbit and a grinning Cheshire Cat, there was plenty of storybook magic to experience.

You’ll also have seen the gentleman fox Mr. Tod, Peter Rabbit and his feathered accomplice Cock Robin from the beloved tales of Beatrix Potter and Aesop's Goose That Laid the Golden Egg. A wonderful ensemble of bronze sculptures and water features, and we hope you enjoyed searching them all out.

Remember, Forde Abbey opens again in early February for the Snowdrop Weekends, so we’d very much recommend pencilling in a visit in the new year. We’ve yet to find a better way to spend an afternoon, immersed in nature and grand architecture, with literary treasures from your childhood just waiting to be discovered!

Winnie the Pooh Garden Sculpture Range

Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge and lean over to watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you will suddenly know everything there is to be known.

We introduced a stunning new water feature to our Winnie the Pooh collection; a glorious Poohsticks Bridge display which captures the iconic chapter from A.A. Milne’s 1928 book, The House at Pooh Corner, in which three firm friends, Christopher, Winnie the Pooh, and Piglet, lean over the bridge to watch their sticks float downstream.

Poohsticks is a delightfully simple game invented by the English author for his son Christopher Robin Milne, one which requires only some sticks, a bridge, and a stream or river. Could you picture this grand water feature in your garden?

RHS Chelsea Flower Show

We were delighted to be able to display our beautiful handmade bronze creations at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year — the greatest flower show on earth!

As well as meeting so many wonderful people throughout our time there, we were thrilled to showcase our stunning Poohsticks Bridge for the first time. Winnie the Pooh and his dearest friends Piglet and Christopher Robin, without a care in the world, watching as the stream trickles gently below; conjuring sepia-tinged memories of the countryside, picnics with the family and a time of simple pleasures…

Alongside our Ratty and Mole water featureThe Wise Falcon sculpture, Mr. Badger, Miss Tiggy-Winkle, and much more, we also unveiled a new Barefoot King sculpture; as well as a range of limited edition James Coplestone coloured illustrations which are still available to purchase.

New projects on the horizon

We also announced the securing of exclusive rights to create bronze sculptures of the beloved characters from Judith Kerr’s timeless classics, The Tiger Who Came to Tea and Mog the Forgetful Cat. These cherished children’s tales have delighted generations of children and adults for decades, remaining firm favourites on the bookshelves of readers across the world.

Using Kerr’s beautiful and iconic illustrations as inspiration, we’ll be working hard over the coming months to bring this new series of literary sculptures to life – a range that will include a stunning 5-foot-tall water feature of the famous tiger drinking from a teapot!

This new project will have much of our attention throughout the festive season and into the New Year, with the plan to unveil the new collection at the 2025 RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
